The vignette requirement for vehicles
The vignette requirement applies to all vehicles, such as cars and trailers with a permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, as well as motorcycles. Trucks and other vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes, however, are exempt from the vignette requirement. These vehicles are required to pay a heavy goods vehicle fee (LSVA). It is also important to note that a separate vignette is required for any trailers. Vehicles with a permissible total weight of over 3.5 tonnes are exempt from the vignette requirement; instead, the heavy goods vehicle fee must be paid.
The introduction of the digital vignette
Until August 2023, the Swiss vignette was only available in the form of a physical sticker. These could be purchased at various locations, such as customs offices, post offices, rest areas, and gas stations in Switzerland and the neighboring border region. To properly affix the vignette, it had to be affixed to the inside of the windshield, either on the left edge or behind the interior rearview mirror. The validity period was indicated by the year and various color combinations.
The e-vignette, a digital version of the vignette, was introduced in Switzerland on August 1, 2023. However, the e-vignette is not intended to replace the traditional sticker; both options will continue to exist in parallel. With the e-vignette, the vehicle license plate number is registered, which allows for automated verification of the vignette's validity via database access.
You can conveniently purchase the digital 1-year vignette for Switzerland online in our shop. The corresponding vehicle license plate number will be registered.
